Garratt Wellness Centre - prevent & manage diabetes, heart disease, lung disease and arthritis.

Garratt Wellness Centre

About Us

Mission

To promote independence and to empower people to improve or maintain health status through increased awareness of and access to health promotion services.

“The Wellness Centre is based on a premise that no one alone can prevent, manage, or live with chronic diseases….not an individual alone, nor a family alone, not a service provider alone, nor a community alone.” Dr. James Lu

“We’re making it easier for people in Richmond to link with health care providers, educators and programs, for a healthier, life long journey.” Dr. Jeff Coleman

History

The Garratt Wellness Centre is one of several programs that received start up funding from the Primary Health Care Transition Fund.

In September 2004, the Centre opened as a community health partnership between the City of Richmond, Vancouver Coastal Health – Richmond Health Services, and other community partners, with the objective of helping people learn skills to prevent or manage chronic conditions such as diabetes or heart disease.

The Centre was established on a former school site, Garratt Elementary school at 7504 Chelsea Place, through a partnership with the City of Richmond. The City owns the school and leases it to Vancouver Coastal Health. The school encompasses 6000 square feet and has been renovated to include a teaching kitchen, fitness centre (with a number of treadmills, bikes, free and cable weights), a group counseling room, and two each of exam rooms, teaching rooms and counseling offices (where a nurse or educator can have some confidential time with a client).

The Centre officially opened April 1, 2006 and continues to expand specialized programs and resources to help Richmond residents manage their chronic conditions and improve the quality of their lives.
